Travel should bring freedom, rather than tie your stomach in knots even before you leave home.
For many, the excitement of travel gets tangled up with worry:
so many things to do before you go
a tight chest in the security check queue
the same anxious thoughts (about safety, costs, getting lost, âŠ) repeating, over and over
Research shows that around 90% of travellers find travel to be stressful.
Resilience for travel comes from building a skillset, not from just gritting your teeth and pushing through.
…from bracing for travel,
…to trusting (and enjoying) yourself
Everyone else hands you a template for the trip, the flights, the hotels, the itinerary.
This is built around YOU, how you plan without becoming overwhelmed by details, how your body handles the time change, how you cope when the trip goes sideways, how you pivot when the plan no longer fits, how you get unstuck on the one decision you can’t move past.
Different moments, same discipline. Change management is what I do for a living, helping people move through disruption. Applied here to every part of a trip most people never think to plan for.
What is this?
Together, we build your personal mental fitness and resilience model for travel, using two tools:
Trigger Mapping, and
the 5 Mental Fitness Pillars
This isn’t generic advice like just breathe, or think positive. It’s built around you and your own travel history, not a âone size fits allâ script.
And it works whenever and wherever stress or anxiety shows up, be that before you leave home, during your trip, or both.
By the end of the session, youâll have your own travel resilience model to follow. And once you have it, it’s yours to use on every trip after this one.
Why do you need this?
Travel can be unpredictable, with unexpected challenges, and even situations beyond our control, always a possibility.
These can give rise to stress or anxiety.
And here’s what nobody tells you.
Both stress and anxiety are completely normal human emotions, rooted in the ancient “fight-flight-freeze” survival instincts we have inherited from our caveman ancestors.
Even in the 21st Century, stress and anxiety are completely normal human emotions. They are NOT something to âfixâ, and they are NOT a sign of weakness or of a mental health deficiency.
And when you might feel stressed or anxious, you’re not alone in feeling this way (remember – research shows that around 90% of travellers find travel to be stressful).
The answer here isn’t just willpower alone. It’s actually a skillset, called âmental fitnessâ. This is something that you can build, the same way you build your physical fitness.
As one of my Army fitness instructors used to say: âphysical strength is wasted if you haven’t also trained the âmuscle between your ears â â.
Why did I create this?
Several years ago, I was taking my Mum to the Baltic when a stopover delay turned a short transit into a sprint through an unfamiliar Zurich airport, with minutes to spare.
We made it â just! But it wasn’t the planning that got us there, it was staying steady enough to think clearly under pressure (because I couldnât have a meltdown in front of my Mum when we were thousands of miles away from home).
That’s what made me realise: it isn’t travel planning that carries you through the hard moments; rather it’s mental stuff (like having focussed thoughts, aka âmind over matterâ â something else I learned in my Army days).
That day in Zurich, even as I was trying really hard to focus on what we needed to do to catch our flight to Stockholm, I was also struggling to suppress my rising panic about missing it. There was no point in thinking about anything else except catching the flight; all other thoughts were not helpful.
Experiences like that are why I created this session, the one I wished I’d had that day in Zurich, and now it’s yours.
Who is this for?
Because travel can be unpredictable, unexpected challenges, including situations beyond our control, are always a possibility.
Some situations may be like events that can happen at home (something is lost, broken, etc.). But travel stress or anxiety can also come from apparently less-obvious sources, including:
a disconnect with our usual daily routine
pressure to be ready at a given date/time
the âthe unknownâ from visiting new places
Do any of these common reactions to travel stress and anxiety sound familiar?
Your chest tightens just thinking about what lies ahead, even before you start out
Your planned trips get cancelled, shrunk, or delayed because of anxiety
You experience pre-trip insomnia or restless sleep in the days leading up to your travel date
You get anxious or stressed when something changes before or during travel
Your mind replays a range of âwhat-ifâ scenarios, over and over, again and again
The change from your normal diet, exercise regimens, and sleep cycle leaves you physically and mentally overwhelmed
You want to feel steady and in control, not just âcopeâ
Generic âcalm downâ advice (breathe, focus, count to 10) simply falls short
You feel like you’re the only one who reacts this way when things happen
The negative physical and mental toll of your recent travels have left you vowing never to travel again
A quick note:
this is a coaching session for building practical mental fitness skills related to travel. It isn’t therapy or treatment for a diagnosed mental health condition. If that’s what you need, this session can sit alongside professional support, not replace it.
When should you do this?
While there’s no âwrongâ time, the best time to complete
That said, maybe you’ve already started planning, or perhaps you’re mid-way into your planning.
Wherever you are in the process, this session will give you the model and the structure you need to move forward with confidence.
What changes for you
This is the âshiftâ this session is built around:
From bracing for travel, to trusting (and enjoying) yourself through it
From feeling like the only one who reacts this way, to understanding your own pattern
From dreading the journey, to walking in knowing exactly what to do
From âwhite knucklingâ your way through a trip, to actually being present for it
From the same spiral every time something goes wrong, to a solution you already trust
How it works
What we’ll work through together:
Identifying which of the four travel stress types feels most like you (the Fighter, the Flighter, the Freezer, or the Adapter), so you finally understand your own pattern, instead of fighting it
Understanding the real differences between stress and anxiety, so you know which one you’re dealing with, and what actually helps
Knowing why travel stress and anxiety happen, so you stop blaming yourself for something that’s part of our biology, not an individual character flaw
Creating your personal Trigger Map, so you know and understand exactly what sets off your stress or anxiety, and how you respond to these, emotionally and physically
Developing coping strategies matched to your actual triggers, so you have something real to reach for, not just another generic tip
Applying the 5 Mental Fitness Pillars, to create a personal resilience model so you can target exactly where to focus your energies, as you build your mental skillset
You’ll walk away with
The âshiftâ from bracing for travel, to trusting (and enjoying) yourself through it
Confidence that replaces uncertainty, worry, stress, anxiety, trip after trip
A Trigger Map, with coping strategies, that turns “why does this keep happening” into “I know exactly what to do”
A personal resilience model you actually trust, because it’s built around you, not a template
Three bonus resources, ready whenever you need them:
- a bedtime ritual guide,
- a step by step packing flow, and
- phone âwallpaperâ cards for the moments a workbook can’t reach
How much for the session?
AUD $197, for a 90 minute, 1 on 1 session, via Zoom.
P.S. Think about what travel anxiety can cost you: a trip cancelled, scaled back, delayed, or lived through in your head instead of lived at all. Ninety minutes, against confidence you carry for life.
